Seed Starters

Seed starters are a great, easy activity if you have soil and seeds. The starters pictured just use a strip of paper between two plastic cups and markers to decorate. You can make biodigradable ones too, just use half a toilet paper roll and fold the open end closed!

"The Green Grass Grows All Around" is a great song and activity that ties in music, literacy and the environment. This video is of a volunteer doing the lesson for the first time with a class of second graders. It may take a few trial runs with younger kids but be creative, add instruments, have a student lead the song, keep it dynamic! Kids were singing this song throughout the day after this lesson... I even heard a few teachers humming it!

Migration Mania Game

Line kids up along a start line and put fewer plastic bottles (or rocks or sticks etc) at the finish. Explain that many birds "migrate" to Jamaica during the winter, but they have a lot of obstacles to overcome. Narrate "You leave New York with your flock, but three of you die of starvation." take away 3 bottles and students must run, collect a bottle and return to the start. Students with no bottle are dead. Keep giving scenarios until there is one survivor. Explains survival of the fittest and why migration is important.
